A scaling law for interstellar depletions

چکیده

An analytical expression is presented that allows gas-to-dust elemental depletions to be estimated in interstellar environments of different types, including Damped Lyα systems, by scaling an arbitrary depletion pattern chosen as a reference. As an improvement on previous work, the scaling relation allows the dust chemical composition to vary and includes a set of parameters which describe how sensitive the dust composition is to changes in both the dust-to-metals ratio and the composition of the medium. These parameters can be estimated empirically from studies of Galactic and extragalactic depletion patterns. The scaling law is able to fit all the typical depletion patterns of the Milky Way ISM (cold disk, warm disk, and warm halo) with a single set of parameters, by only varying the dust-to-metals ratio. The dependence of the scaling law on the abundances of the medium has been tested using interstellar observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), for which peculiar depletion patterns have been reported in literature. The scaling law is able to fit these depletion patterns assuming that the SMC relative abundances are slightly non solar. Depletion patterns and dust evolution in the ISM

We review the use of elemental depletions in determining the composition of interstellar dust and present a new interpretation of the elemental depletion patterns for the dust forming elements in a range of diffuse cloud types. We discuss this within the context of dust processing in the ISM and show that Si and Mg are selectively eroded from dust, with respect to Fe, as expected for a sputteri...

Interstellar Dust

In the interstellar medium of the Milky Way, certain elements – e.g., Mg, Si, Al, Ca, Ti, Fe – reside predominantly in interstellar dust grains. These grains absorb, scatter, and emit electromagnetic radiation, heat the interstellar medium by photoelectric emission, play a role in the ionization balance of the gas, and catalyze the formation of molecules, particularly H2. I review the state of ...

THE SCALING LAW FOR THE DISCRETE KINETIC GROWTH PERCOLATION MODEL

The Scaling Law for the Discrete Kinetic Growth Percolation Model The critical exponent of the total number of finite clusters α is calculated directly without using scaling hypothesis both below and above the percolation threshold pc based on a kinetic growth percolation model in two and three dimensions. Simultaneously, we can calculate other critical exponents β and γ, and show that the scal...

Numerical Simulations of Incompressible Mhd Turbulence

The study of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence gives useful insights on many astrophysical problems. We describe a pseudo-spectral MHD code suitable for the study of incompressible turbulence. We review our recent works on direct three-dimensional numerical simulations for MHD turbulence in a periodic box. In those works, we use a pseudo-spectral code to solve the incompressib...

The Star Formation Law in a Multifractal ISM

The surface density of the star formation rate in different galaxies, as well as in different parts of a single galaxy, scales nonlinearly with the surface density of the total gas. This observationally established relation is known as the Kennicutt-Schmidt star formation law. The slope of the star formation law has been shown to change with the density of the gas against which the star formati...
